We're all spending A TON of time on screens these days. And there are so many positive influences in pop culture — but they're often overshadowed by violence, misogyny, and other destructive teachings. 1/8
There’s no sheltering young people from music or movies or shows or video games that denigrate and demean women so our job is to TALK about it. 2/8
With help from some friends and experts, I came up with four clear strategies for how we can digest media and learn from it — especially with the young people in our lives. 3/8
First: Consume content with your kids. Listening and watching together is the only way to start a conversation. And it can be a bonding experience. 4/8
Second: Don't condemn a specific genre. There's good in every type of movie and music - and writing off a whole genre stops the discussion before it starts. 5/8
Third: Praise the good. Since #HealthyManhood is my focus, I tend to point out and praise examples of men breaking the mold. Some in my family might say I never stop :) 6/8
Fourth: Be mindful of your own consumption. I recently watched an old #JamesBond film — it was filled with coercive sexual behavior and sexual assault that would not fly today (and shouldn't have then!). Make a point to name things — past and present — as what they are. 7/8
What else are you doing to #NetflixandReflect? We'll be diving into this topic tomorrow on zoom with actor & activist @MattMcGorry. Will you join us? RSVP here for dial-in details: https://www.acalltomen.org/community-conversations
