I'm coming around to the view that in certain key respects liberal political theory is closer to Christian truth than the thuggery they are putting together over there on the postliberal right

At its best the liberal tradition posits (in line with Christianity) the idea of a God given law that is knowable and binds universally in all men by nature

This explains in part its cosmopolitanism and universalism, which a thoroughgoing "antiliberalism" is forced to deny

Seems to me like the reaction against this has been to displace any idea of human community with pure sectarian power-struggle, a bit like an uncouth interpretation of Marxism

As was once often noted, not every antiliberalism is superior to liberalism

I don't of course mean this to minimize the degree to which liberal theory is a form of lie to justify the violence of liberal practice, but I don't suspect the postliberal right is entirely free of this pathology either
