As the nonbinary identity category continues to develop in-group memes, aesthetics, norms, and other cultural markers (while insisting that this isnât happening)
what do you suppose will be the term for people who are not men, women, or nonbinary?

what is nonbinary? I would have been in a relevant category in the 90s but not today.
if this category were being culturally formulated differently today, I would be in it
this is a difficult topic because everyone keeps talking as if gender categories are fixed and not culturally emergent
I get into circular conversations whenever I talk about this
bc every time, someone says I should leave the convo about nonbinary to nonbinary people
but the whole reason Iâm not one of ânonbinary peopleâ is that the category has been culturally marked this way & not another

for good reason, I think people get scared when I talk about this, that Iâm trying to take their identity away or say itâs wrong
but Iâm trying to say something about how cultural markers can make categories feel wrong or unavailable, even when their textbook definitions fit

I certainly am the wrong fit for any event or group calling for âwomen & nonbinary folks,â for example, and should remain the wrong fit â culturally, Iâm not what theyâre looking for
& yet my gender is not quite the same as cis gay menâs
so am I in the nonbinary category???

Iâm saying the opposite of ânonbinary isnât real.â
Nonbinary is so real that itâs too culturally specific for me to be part of the category!

TL;DR: goth faggots are not part of contemporary gender discourse
