The main purpose of masks is to protect others, particularly the most vulnerable.

Huge numbers in the Bible Belt won't wear masks, just like many fundamentalist preachers, often excusing their behavior with references to God.

Here are all the words of Jesus they are ignoring:
..Galatians 6:2 - "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

John 15:12 - "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you"

Matthew 5:16 - "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds.../2
..Sorry, referenced this wrong. Galatians is Paul, not Jesus. But some more Biblical violations, with the next being a big one from Paul:

Philippians 2:4 - "Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."
...
Proverbs 3:27 - "Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act."

Hebrews 6:10 - "God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them."

.../4
...Matthew 10:8 - "Freely you have received; freely give."

Deuteronomy 15:11 - 'You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.'"

Proverbs 11:25 - "A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed."

.../5
...and the most important of all: Jesus's words that those who ignore those in need - like those who might die if infected, particulary the elderly and infirm:..../6
...

Matthew 25:44-45: "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, & did not help you?' He will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me."
...there are fundamentalist evangelicals who understand that the words of Jesus and Paul are about improving yourself and your relation to others and to God - all about introspection. But too many believe it is about condemning others while praising themselves for...
...the depth of their faith. This hate and hubris is the opposite of the messages of Jesus and Paul. And it always stuns me that so many people who claim to be devout know more about who won American Idol than about the Bible they have not read and pretend to revere.
