How Hisoka and Illumi are a darker parallel of Gon and Killua: an attempt at a thread
Hisoka’s fixation on Gon and Illumi’s obsession with controlling Killua are just a few of the more obvious ways viewers might draw connections between the two pairs, but there is so much more.

Gon and Killua are great friends, no doubt. Gon has a goal that he’s striving towards, and Killua is there to help him achieve it. Ultimately, there’s still an innocent, pure quality to their friendship because they are still children
Hisoka and Illumi, on the other hand, have a transactional relationship. While Hisoka views Illumi as a “friend” throughout the series, Illumi insists on referring to Hisoka as a colleague. While Hisoka has a goal of fighting powerful opponents, Illumi doesn’t necessarily have-
any personal goals of his own, with his actions mainly motivated by duty towards his family.
In this way, there are parallels between Gon and Hisoka, with both of them having specific goals they want to achieve. In a way, they can be the selfish ones in the pair.

For example, Gon insisting on fighting Pitou alone even though Killua was supposed to take Pitou on together with him, and Hisoka choosing to go against Illumi’s request to help him kill Alluka so that he can save Gon.
There are also parallels between Killua and Illumi, who (for the most part of the series) don’t particularly have goals of their own and are extrinsically motivated, with Killua wanting to help Gon and Illumi’s duty to his family. Both have identities defined by external factors
About Illumi and Killua: It makes sense that Killua is similar to Illumi at a glance; Illumi has taken care to groom Killua to become a cold-blooded killer from birth, and ingrained many of his own values as a successful assassin in Killua. However, this is where they differ.
Killua has chosen a path with Gon, someone whom he considers a comrade and friend. He’s young & moldable, which is why spending time with Gon has allowed Killua to grow in ways that Illumi never could, having been isolated to train relentlessly to be a killer as the eldest Zoldyck
About Hisoka and Gon: We don’t know much about Hisoka’s past, but given that he’s been shown to work alone (aside from partnering with his bffs Illumi, and Machi at a stretch) we can assume that he doesn’t have strong connections with family or other friends. Back to Gon: -
Gon was raised by Aunt Mito & grandma (& judging from the ep where he and Killua returned to whale island) he is a good boy with strong values inculcated by his Aunt. But he was missing something: a father figure.
And so Gon’s main goal in life was to track down his dad to find the connection he so sorely desires. In a way, Hisoka is the same. Let me explain: Hisoka is shown to spend majority of his time tracking down strong opponents to fight. He relishes in the thrill of the fight, and-
Possibly, he yearns for a connection to some worthy adversary, albeit a twisted one. Case in point: his obsession with Chrollo and Gon, and even Illumi. Humans have a fundamental need for social connection; Hisoka might have been deprived of this at a young age, and therefore-
seeks a warped form of connection to compensate for it in his adulthood.
This is just speculation, because it’s also possible that Hisoka is an actual psychopath, in which case desire for emotional and social connection is null and void (that’s a whole other can of worms).

Gon could have gone down a similar route as Hisoka (although not quite as sexually-charged, perhaps) he has a tendency to take a single-minded approach to his goal, ignoring the bigger picture. Without Killua with him, he could have gone down a dangerous path
We’ve seen a glimpse of this when he took Pitou on alone, an act he paid for with dire consequences. Without Killua, he would almost certainly be dead. This brings us to the parallel with Hisoka. Hisoka’s obsession with fighting powerful opponents would surely lead to his demise.

and while he makes impulse decisions, Killua is there to cover for him. Hisoka, however, is alone. Although Illumi is his “partner” of sorts, he has no hand to play in Hisoka’s individual goal of fighting opponents and when it comes down to it, Hisoka has to cover for himself.
this is getting way too long because there’s a lot to unpack BUT ESSENTIALLY: Hisoka and Illumi are warped examples of what Gon and Killua could have been, had they not found each other. I guess what I’m trying to say is STAN KILLUGON their bond is what saved them from themselves

Probably my longest thread to date, I want to do more in future and if you’re interested in more lighthearted threads, maybe some fun AU HCs or x reader stuff with Hisoka, check these out
