Rumah kampungs are designed to self ventilate. Lots of windows, high ceiling, planted bushy trees on side of the wall that face the afternoon sun. It's called passive cooling. But 'modern' renovation, furniture layout that blocks ventilation ruins the whole thing. https://twitter.com/danialsuhaizans/status/1265121632755920896
There's a reason why pokok like pokok pisang, rambutan, jambu, mangga can be found around your grandparents kampung houses; to block the sun. High ceiling to aerate and ventilate hot air. That's why rumah kampung has ventilation blocks like these.
There's a office building/mall in Zimbabwe that uses no air conditioning. It is modelled after termite mounds. Indoor temperature is maintained at 27°C day and night. This is achieved through passive cooling.
This is like porn to me. Discovered this when I was figuring out how to cool my house without aircond. Floor layout, windows and doors placement, height of the house all play a role. Everything must come together.
