/ A short thread on housing in the Rodings, rural Essex. In non-chronological order, first up 'Swedish Houses' in High Roding - two of around 2450 permanent prefabricated timber homes supplied by the Swedish government in 1945-46.
/ Just around the corner, council homes built by Dunmow Rural District Council in, I think, the 1930s. The Council built 675 houses between the wars.
/ Beauchamp Roding but Ongar Rural District Council - two pairs on council homes on School Lane built after the Second World War.
/ A number of farms in the district were bought by the London Cooperative Society, including Berners Hall Farm in 1936. My guess is that these homes, adjacent to the farm, were built by the Society for its farm workers.
/ Council housing effected a housing revolution for many low-paid farm workers. This is a deeply rural area - St Botolph's Church in nearby Beauchamp Roding is only accessible by footpath and track.
