JURASSIC WORLD THREAD TIME
Usually when there is talk of Pteranodons of the franchise, JW's Pteranodon is mentioned as being terrible because it's inaccurate or ugly. The latter part is entirely subjective. Whether you like it or don't is entirely up to your personal tastes. Per-
sonally I do like JW's Pteranodon, though I'm not a fan of the color choices. Anyways, the inaccuracies part I've come to doubt a little. I've noticed some things that JW's Ptera has that JP's doesn't. Smaller details of accuracy and inaccuracy which go ignored. I'm writing this
Thread to see whether it is true that JW's is anatomically worse or not. In truth, I don't know either, so time to begin the comparisons, starting with the head.
The head shape of Pteranodon vary specimen to specimen. There's a lot of individual variation, so crest shape can go
Ignored. One thing to note is that Horner reveals that the crests on the Pteros are small in JW because they're all females. Whether Jp's are female or male can't be told, tho a special "black Pteranodon" was made, which is considered to be the male. It went unused in the film.
Our first problem is visible already. JW's shape shows a specific transition from Crest to beak and an upwards curving beak seen in Witton's diagram while Jp has a straight beak with a far more smoother/recumbent transition.
That's point 1 for JW
JW:JP
1:0
In the real Pteranodon, there is an extreme change of shape in the lower jaw where it suddenly narrows towards the end. Dunno if it has a name but I just call it a "cut" since it indicates the presence of a gular pouch. Like on a pelican. JW's has
it but JP3's doesn't. Two more point for JW
3:0
Going back to the beak, there is something that I missed. Pteranodon has an overbite. It is huge in males, but extremely reduced in females. JW shows the overbite, but fairly reduced, as it should be in a female ptero, while JP has an even beak tip.
Another point for JW 4:0
Moving to the wings. Inaccuracies are pointy wing tips, shrinkwrapped arms, and the fact that the cheiropatagium doesn't attach to the ankles in either two. But both wings are generally narrow, like an albatross, which shares a similar lifestyle, so that's one point for each 5:1
JW Ptero has fingers pointing to the sides of the body, unlike Jp3's which has fingers pointing forwards
6:1
Moving onto the body, Pteranodon have a deep chest for flight muscle attachment. Jp3's has a shallow chest, a smooth transition from neck to chest. In JW's the chest is properly expanded, with the bone jutting out immediately.
7:1
Moving onto the feet now, we are all aware of the fact that Pterosaurs didn't have grasping talons. Both movies got that wrong. JP3 specifically gave its Ptero, 5 visible toes while JW has a proper 4. 8:1
One thing both got wrong is how the toes individually poke out which
wouldn't have been the case as their entire foot was covered in skin with only the claws poking out. The toes were all covered in webbing.

And one last thing would be the fact that JP3 has teeth while Jw doesn't. 9:1

The only reason JP3 didn't get too many points for is
Because the things it does right are basic pterosaur anatomy which anyone can get right. It gets the more important and intricate details wrong which Jw gets right. Even if you counted in the basic anatomy parts, JW's would still win as it has the more modern anatomical aspects
Of Pteranodon. So there you have it, JW has a more accurate Pteranodon, but looking over at the general consensus of the fanbase, Jp3 has a far more appealing design which wins out for everyone. Aside from being called ugly, which I guess it is, JW's is still far more accurate
