the problem with adults playing teenagers is that casting directors don't seem to understand what a teenager looks like, if the adult genuinely could pass for a teen i don't see the problem with it. it's actually probably more ethical
children shouldn't work to the same extent as adults anyway. the problem is the incredibly unrealistic standards it sets on teenagers when you have like perfect looking 27 year olds with mature bodies playing what should be an awkward teenager
but it is very possible to cast adults who actually pass as teens. for example ralph macchio was 23 when he played 17 year old daniel in karate kid
the reason for this thread was a tweet i saw about euphoria's casting. the problem with the way euphoria portrays teenage sexuality does not lie in the casting.
i think it's good they casted adults because it is a very heavy show and there is a lot of nudity. i think zendaya and hunter could easily pass as teenagers, which goes for most of the girls. the problem with the way euphoria portrays teenage sexuality is....
....yea the sexualization. if you compare it to skins, where most of the cast were teens. the portrayal of sex is very different. there is a lot of sex and nudity in skins too, but it's not "sexy", it is not erotic. there you have characters who look like teens, and
teens do have sex, but it's not beautiful, erotic and
excessive the way it is in euphoria. so the problem with euphoria is not that you have adults playing sexy teenagers, it's that you have sexy teenagers. skins is less problematic not because
the cast is younger but because the nudity is not erotic in the same way.
