I cannot believe the lack of consideration or even discussion around disabled adults living in residential care, who haven't had contact with their families in over 10 weeks. Families who are all a massive part of their lives, routines and mental health. #CoronaVirus @UKgovcomms
Families like mine have waited patiently. There's no risk we'd take if it meant jeopardising the health of my sister or the other vulnerable people she lives with. At the same time, we have no further information or directive for when this will ease. @UKgovcomms @MayorofLondon
Parents and siblings are key to the mental health of many of these vulnerable adults. We are decimating their trust in the name of upholding bio-security, against a government who don't seem to give a shit if the R rate increases, if 1000's more are infected. @UKLabour @BBCNews
And whilst the government decides to roll the dice on public health, fails to provide adequate testing, PPE and care, care homes security measures must stay in full lockdown. No end in sight. No action plans laid. They can't. The risk is increasing. @guardian @Telegraph
Meanwhile, #Cummings can fuck off to Durham and claim 'exceptional circumstances'. Where is the testing for vital family visitors? Extra PPE? Or even reassurance this is in the pipeline? My sister has 2 huge annual events. Christmas and her birthday. @BorisJohnson @DavidLammy
Next month my sisters 30th will come and go & we will pretend her birthday hasn't happened yet, because she won't understand that we can't have the party she has every year. My mum is inconsolable. We need disabled adults to be at the forefront of gov. discussion. We need action.
As measures ease for the general population, please consider how this is impacting families who are now wondering if we will see our loved ones before Christmas. Wondering how we will rebuild our trust when we do. Fearing long term and complex mental health repercussions.
My sister doesn't want to engage with FaceTime. I couldn't visit her outside her window. There is no digital or distanced version of seeing her that is viable. We are bereft. We are grieving. We are clinging to 10 second films sent once a week by cate staff. This is not enough.
Anyway. My sister is the fucking angel of the world. Here she is. When we can hug, I won't ever want it to end.
