In the harsh winter of 2010, exactly a decade ago, I had made a trip to Eastern Ladakh, trying to make sense of the topography, the people, the preparedness. The temps: between minus 5 and minus 20; living is difficult, leave alone guarding the frontier https://www.ndtv.com/video/shows/ndtv-special-ndtv-24x7/the-frozen-frontier-129162
As Ladakh remains in the news, it is good to revisit that short, 18-min film. Two or three highlights. 1. Yogesh Joshi, then a brigadier, commanding the Tangse-based 114 Brigade (seen in the meeting with the Chinese), is now the Northern Army Commander;
In between Lt Gen Joshi has commanded the Karu-based 3 Division and the Leh-based 14 Corps. And he has been India's defence Attache to Beijing! So we have a specialist who knows Ladakh and China very well, heading the Northern Command! So no worries there.
2. Had a rare chance to board the Army's patrol boats on the Pangang Tso & 3. Of course drive through mostly snow-bound Eastern Ladakh. The trip happened after the then Northern Army Commander (old friend) Lt Gen BS Jaswal challenged me (in jest) to brave the winter; which we did
Many things have changed in Ladakh now: Roads have improved; There are more troops deployed; airstrip in DBO is now active and more importantly, there is an armoured brigade stationed in high altitude. In short, Indian military is no pushover @adgpi @NorthernComd_IA
