You have to respect the bollocks on Sky News. Channel 4 have been gutsy too but others have been hugely disappointing throughout all of this (quelle surprise). When LADBible are asking better questions than supposedly respected political journalists we should all be worried.
The demise of well-resourced, credible, robust journalism is a threat to every value we supposedly hold dear (truth/justice - things we agree with across the spectrum). Without proper journalism democracy doesn't work and power is abused with no consequence.
Johnson & Cummings speak of the media with contempt and yes, some journalists are awful. The ones who lie for example (can we remind ourselves that Boris was a journalist and that Cummings's wife indicated in her recent Spectator piece that they spent their isolation in London).
Journalists are there to ask difficult questions, to scrutinise, to make sure that the questions the public want answering are put to those in power - even the questions that the public might not know that that they want answering yet. There is supposed to be an uncomfortable
...relationship between the politicians and the media to some degree. Those in power need to know that journalists are there to fact-check and push back. It is their job to make sure that politicians are doing their jobs too. There is no room for coziness here, especially now.
This is beyond culture wars, beyond Brexit, beyond left and right. This is, as I said at the beginning, about truth, justice and integrity. It is that simple, and real journalism is there to protect us all. If it is under threat, which it is, so are our core values as a nation.
