Of the Chinese transgressions & the related disputes, a short thread:
Following the incidence of transgression several areas of eastern Ladakh and North Sikkim witnessed major military build-up by both the Indian and Chinese. This is a clear signal of escalating tension and hardening of respective positions by the two sides.
China also accused the Indian Army of trespassing into its territory and called it an attempt to unilaterally change the status of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Sikkim and Ladakh.
China has objected to construction of a new road which branches off the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie (DSDBO) road as well as the road in Galwan area and according to reports have claimed the entire area now.
There are growing tension regarding the Pangong Lake, Naku La in Sikkim and Demchokin Ladakh. In 1960 and 1980s, swap was hinted at by China, which would have essentially formalised the status quo.
Both sides have now ruled out the status quo as a settlement, agreeing to meaningful and mutual adjustments. At the same time, the most realistic solution will involve only minor adjustments along the LAC, considering neither side will be willing to part with land already held.
Differing perceptions are particularly acute in around two dozen spots across the Western (Ladakh), Middle (HP, & UK), Sikkim, and Eastern (Arunachal Pradesh) sectors of the India-China border. The boundary in the Sikkim sector is broadly agreed, but has not been delineated.
The 22nd round of talks between the Special Representatives of both the countries was held in Delhi in December 2019.
Both “agreed that an early settlement of the boundary question serves the fundamental interests of both countries”.
But, the rise in the transgressions doesn't seem to end. Boundary dispute is the main point of contention between the two countries. Essentially, what Indians believe to be ‘their side’ is not the same as what the Chinese believe to be ‘their side’.
