Thinking not just of Emmett Till, but the #ExoneratedFive. And George Stinney Jr. In 1944, he became the youngest person executed in the U.S. in the 20th century. Thinking about Alabama’s Scottsboro Boys, who, 1931, were falsely accused of raping two white women. Thinking about the false imprisonment and wrongful conviction of William Harper after Dorothy Skaggs accused him of rape in Virginia that same year.
White women’s lies have too often led to the deaths, criminalization and/or incarceration of Black boys and men.
And there are always white men, often the perpetrators of violence against white women, who commit white supremacist violence allegedly on their behalf—when really they were just looking for an excuse. Ida B. Wells taught us that.
