When I trained people on addressing workplace harassment, I became fascinated with the mindset of people who harassed continuously. With those who were more psychologically inclined, we researched on psychopathy. Think David Hare @jonronson's Psychopath Test...2/
I also follow @jjfreydcourage who coined DARVO (deny, attack, reverse victim and offender) as the typical reaction of someone accused of, say sexual violence, but refuses to be held accountable. It applies to other “crimes” too...3/
Let’s consider the issue: Dominic Cummings is accused of violating government lockdown rules. Ironically, this man is part of the administration that created these rules, with an overriding message: Stay Home....4/
When confronted with an accusation with strong evidence, a person could own up and accept the consequences. Or fight by gaslighting...5/
Gaslighting 101: Detract from message (you violated the rules) by playing victim. Poor me. My wife had the virus. We couldn’t take care of our small son....6/
Play victim further. I am being hounded by the press and public. Get others to support self - by reminding people about Caroline Flack or talking about autism (have they cared about harassment or autism in the past?)...7/
Gaslighting 101: Accuse accusers. The press and public have made up lies about me. Distract from main issue (rules violated) as press have to answer this point...8/
Gaslighting 101: Deny rules are broken by zooming in one exception. Lawyers play this game and we know when we are stretching it beyond its purpose. Further distraction from message (rules violated) by ignoring main principle (Stay Home) and focusing on tiny exception...9/
Gaslighting 101: Spin new narrative - drove up to Durham, went to Barnard Castle to test eyesight etc. That’s classic distraction. Now we focus on the narrative rather than main issue - Stay Home rule violated...10/
Stick to the core: A man who was part of the administration with a clear Stay Home message, especially if he or a family member had symptoms FAILED to stay home. He went back to work and knowingly put people at No 10 at risk.
A man in a senior position violated rules which are in place to save lives. If he doesn't have the decency to resign, then his boss has no choice but to fire him. The fact that the prime minister defends him just boggles the mind. Don't be gaslit.
