Maabane I wrote about how luck has played a big part in my success and a lot had to do with my network assisting me for opportunities. People tend to think this means you have to know some celeb type people who you see on magazine covers. This isn’t the case
Almost all my friends who have helped me with opportunities were jus normal people I met ko Phikwe and ko UB. Normal on-camp, grew up ko bo Moshupa or Tonota type people. Mathata we undervalue those relationships. UB students of today are CEOs, Directors of 15 years from now
Allow me to name drop shamelessly
I know Beauty Manake, Dithapelo Keorapetse, Bogolo Kenewendo from Phikwe and high school. I became friends with CEO/MD/GMs of companies like BSE, BancABC, AdaptIT, Kwa Nokeng Oil, Caltex, Stockbrokers Botswana, Liberty General from early work life and UB.
In friends with all marketing managers of the major banks except Standard Chartered from UB. I’m friends with Exco Members and Managers from ABSA, FNB, Stanbic, BDC, CEDA, BIHL, Mascom, BTC, Orange etc.

All of them met ko bo UB and before ele “normal” people at the time
When you get into all levels of govt I have contacts. Most are not director/PS level yet but they’ll get there. Every government office or parastatal there’s always someone I recognize from UB. Always. Landboards, councils etc. You have no idea how much easier this makes life
What’s my point??

Realize that your biggest networking asset are the people you’re sitting in class with or used to see at the refec at school. Don’t be the cool kid who doesn’t talk to anyone and prides themselves ka “nna I don’t know any of my class mates”
The people at the bottom now will be decision makers in 5-10 years. So be kind to people. Assist them. Be a genuine person and cast your net wide. That’s where your opportunities will come from in future. You don’t need to try meet current CEOs. O shapo ka your friends
So remember, jus remember as you rock your cool kid vibe o le a dick to people now. That Tutume McConnell kid you don’t even talk to and look down upon, Will be the decision maker that gives your business a deal in 15 years. Jus think about how he/she should remember you
