The fort of madurai was one of the strong and beautifully arranged in the south india. With the in built streets with tamil month names like aadi veedhi, chithirai veedhi, maasi veedhi, avani moola veedhi, etc
The inner most fort wad built by pandiyas and today few of it remains exist like pandiyan agali (moat surrounded the fort)street, pandiya vellalar street, vitta vaasal (once the entrance of pandiyan fort) in amman shrine street
Later nayak rulers expanded the fort during viswatha nayak period addind 72 bastions and 4 main entrances on each directions. Today only north entrance only survives near periyar bus stand
During the british east india company’s policy of unarming the anti british rulers of the south region like madurai, siva ganga, vadagarai, kayathaaru, etc and as a part of it was dismantling the forts and weakening them..
Madurai collector black burn, who was in charge took actions in destroying the heavy walls of madurai with help of madurai people. To commemorate his work, a light pillar was installed with his name at bottom inlaid stone (today the stone is missing)
