I say this every 26 May since 2007: today is #SorryDay NOT apology day. "Sorry" comes from "Sorry Business" - coming together at times of grief & loss. It's a national day of remembrance and advocacy, started by Stolen Generations members, families and supporters. 1/
The National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal Children from their Families (Bringing Them Home Report, May 1997) highlighted government, churches, institutions and white Australians' involvement in the forcible removal of children. The report had 54 recommendations. 2/
Here are those recommendations > https://bth.humanrights.gov.au/the-report/report-recommendations?_ga=2.177024101.136416336.1527244249-127255200.1527244249
23 yrs later, few have been actioned.

One recommendation was Sorry Day: an annual day of remembrance and advocacy. The first was held in 1998. Another recommendation was a national apology (conducted 13 Feb 2008). 3/-
Sorry Day is not about events in the past. There's still healing to do and justice to be sought. Each year more Stolen Generations members pass on - never forgotten. https://healingfoundation.org.au/stolen-generations/stolen-generation-projects/
First Nations children continue to be removed by draconian, racially-biased systems. 4/-
I encourage you to read the own-voice pieces being shared today, that not only speak of the older Stolen Generations but of the shameful way that First Nations children are still being removed from loving families, incl adopted without family consent. Not in the past - now. 5/-
It's meaningless to post on SM 'sorry' or 'I never knew'. That does nothing but alleviate your feelings of discomfort. Instead, confront the reasons behind that discomfort. If you can't put words to those feelings, then read/listen/reflect. And then find a way to take action. 6/-
