~pansexuality~
hi i am pansexual. there has always been a lot of discourse surrounding pansexuality and bisexuality, and how they are different and similar. and with pride month coming up, i’ve decided to give a little help: a thread
lets start off with: bisexuality
when bisexuality was first formed it did mean two genders and was mainly only applied to men. this was in ancient greece. over time, as most other things, the definition of bisexuality has evolved. bisexuality currently stands as an umbrella term.
bisexuality can and is an umbrella term for people who experience attraction to more than one gender. with this definition, pansexuality can and would fall under the umbrella. but pansexual does not mean the same thing as bisexuality.
sexuality is a spectrum and is incredibly personal and unique to each person. therefore the definitions of a sexuality will be different for different people.
with this in mind, my personal definition for pansexuality is that i am attracted to people “regardless of gender”. others have some form of gender preference or are more attracted to a certain gender, and that is okay. i personally do not experience attraction that way.
many other pansexuals define pansexuality the way i do. though there are some slight variations. but something that is misunderstood by pansexuals and non-pansexuals is that pansexuality is calling bisexual transphobic or that pansexuality is transphobic.
i will say now clearly that pansexuals who specifically call out trans men, trans women, or non-binary people in their definition are being transphobic. by othering trans and non-binary people it is furthering the stigma surrounding both bisexuality and pansexuality.
neither sexuality is transphobic or should be defined as such.
pansexuality is Not bisexuality. if people didn’t need a different sexuality to feel more themselves, then pansexuality wouldn’t exist. but it does. because it was necessary. someone who isn’t pansexual has No Right telling a pansexual about their sexuality
many people have stuck with outdated definitions of sexuality and gender, and that is a big reason the discourse has gotten where it is.
again, with pride month coming up, i wanted to make this to help others. everything in this thread is my own knowledge and understanding. if i have said anything offensive or uneducated please feel free to talk to me as i am always willing to learn more. BUT
if you are going to be rude and invalidate my or anyone’s gender or sexuality, i would rather you just blocked me and move on.
i am open to questions to clarify anything that may be confusing. i’m writing this at one in the morning and sometimes my brain moves faster than my fingers and i forget to add things.
either way. if you made it this far, thank you and happy pride month come june !! 🖤🏳️‍🌈
