Sorry Day was created in 1998 to acknowledge the horror inflicted by the Australian government on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations by removing hundreds of thousands of children from their families. 1 in 3 Aboriginal children were kidnapped. The stolen generations.
In 2020, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are 10 times more likely to be removed from their parents and put into care. They are 17 times more likely to be locked in juvenile prisons.

Aboriginal mothers are sent to prison for unpaid fines, or killed by police.
Aboriginal families are safer from the state now than then because of the relentless work of First Nations leaders, organisations and campaigns. Their work, not governments.

Settler Australia needs to remember that 'Sorry' means we don't do it again. We have so far still to go.
