This day in 2006 ex-PM Gyurcsany delivered the ‘speech of Öszöd’ at Hungarian Socialists’ group meeting, admitting his govt had been lieing ‘morning, night and evening’ for 4 yrs. Leaked to the press, it became a symbol of the socialist-liberal govt’ moral depth.

The speech had devastating effects on the left, leading directly to Fidesz’ landslide victory in 2010. Mr Gyurcsany is now president of far-left Demokratikus Koalíció party, the opposition’s leading force (12%), while his wife, Klara Dobrev is VP of the European Parliament (!)

Mr and Mrs Gyurcsany are a symbol of Hungary’s troublesome transition period when amoral and deeply corrupted family members of the former communist nomenclature took the political and economic power, served by the persisting communist networks.

Mr Gyurcsany, a billioner and beneficiary of obscure privatization deals, now controls the opposition from liberals to far-right, while his international allies are the @TheProgressives, the intl left-liberal media and the Soros-funded NGOs. We wish him good luck.
