Virtual conferences are great as they are more accessible worldwide and environmental-friendly. But it doesnt work well for me as a moderate severe hearing-impaired student + English is my second language. #AcademicChatter @AcademicChatter (1/4)
I heavily rely on lips "reading" in face-to-face communication even with my binaural hearing aids on (improved comprehension, though not perfect). That happens even when the speaker is speaking in a natural speed, not to mention some speakers were speaking extremely fast. (2/4)
Also, the sound was compressed and degraded over internet that most of the time I can only hear bunch of vowels concatenating. If i am tuning up the amplification, then the consonants will clip and I cant comprehend anything as well. (3/4)
That was frustrating to see other discussing and I was totally out of the world. I start wondering if there exists a bottleneck of intelligibility (real-time) for hearing-impaired people to understand second language... (4/4)
