According to data for 22 Indonesian provinces (which we reviewed), as of May 25, there at least 4016 deaths of patients under supervision because they had acute corona symptoms. They were not counted in the official toll of 1391, which counts only those who tested positive 2/x https://twitter.com/f_potkin/status/1265136749082112000
Testing in Indonesia is among the world's lowest and it kneecapped by weeks of delays, low-level of laboratories. Several provincial officials told us the daily government numbers given out often don't match match their own number of positive infections for that day.
The paucity of data has left many regional and city governments scrambling, which is why the work the volunteers of @KawalCOVID19 is doing is so important. And they are doing it by tapping into Indonesia's love of social media & Whatsapp to talk to officials all over the country
Outside of in West Java (which has a population the size of South Korea), Kawal Covid-19 is now advising officials across Indonesia, including both East Java, as well as North Sumatra and Medan, on things from how best to conduct testing/use data for medical triage and lockdowns
