A valediction to Twitter (a thread): Social media is an instrument of stupefaction and consumerism. It is not meant for entertainment, nor has it ever been. Its externalities are (1) a culture of outrage, (2) societal dissatisfaction, and (3) ideological radicalization.
We are often faced with the questions, “Do I want this? Do I need this?” Social media responds, “Why trouble yourself with such silly questions? Your friends have already done it!” You can see, clearly, the malevolence of such an answer.
Therefore I am leaving this thread, and this thread alone, as my legacy on Twitter. This is in the hope that some people (of my whopping 55 followers) will realize that the super-saturation of ideas, and the de-humanization of communication, are not things to be desired.
Obviously, there are some drawbacks to what I’m doing. People rant like this on Twitter all the time. However, this is not done in the interest of my own self-advancement, but rather in the interest of the health and ideological autonomy of everyone who reads this.
So yeah. I’m leaving Twitter. Please consider doing the same.
