a special holiday edition of tomorrow’s @nytimes front page, as it happened
we will lead with a series of images from around new york on this the weirdest of memorial days. so we need to get that settled first.
from there, the page designs itself. the left and bottom are going to be set, and the right side only has two or three options available
the sensible choice at 3 pm was to twin lead stories at the top right and get a small visual down page to help the page flow. in this case, it was a story about museums and virus artifacts
and from there the page filled out straightforwardly
however, the story from @davidenrich’s fabulous biz investigations team on wealthy hospitals receiving HHS funds was so strong it needed to stand alone atop the page. here is the story:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/25/business/hospitals-bailout-billions.html
and this is how the page was adjusted. (easier and faster to redraw in 30 seconds and hold up for the masthead in a google hangout than making those changes digitally, for our “omg have you ever seen a computer” friends)
and here is tuesday’s @nytimes front page: how wealthiest hospitals reaped billions in bailout
