So I've been fascinated by the Panasonic M2 for a while now, and recently I've learned that it wasn't quite as failed as I thought it was! There was actually a final "console" produced: the Panasonic FZ-35S, a system for presentation kiosks... 1/n
which mostly ran videos for car dealerships, but if you put in M2 beta software it will actually play it! 2/n
I wish more of these things were flying around. The other fact is surprisingly, the M2 DID sort of get games developed for it by Konami, who used it as the basis for one of their arcade boards during the 90s and produced a few games... 3/n
the most interesting being a blatant House of the Dead ripoff called Evil Night... 4/n
a vertical shmup called Tobe! Polystars 5/n
and a 3D fighting game called Battle Tryst 6/n
I'd love for there to be a homebrew scene for these, as it looks like it was a decently powerful 3D platform, ahead of the PlayStation and capable of (for the time) decent visuals. It has this real "what if" vibe about it and...
it would have been interesting to see if anyone could have ever really gotten to grips with the platform and made it really sing. I'm sure there would have been one or more awesome games made for the M2 if it had ever gotten its shot... 8/n
but sadly we'll never know. And as well devkits and hardware for this thing are as rare as hen's teeth so the ability to even just explore the hardware of the presentation kiosk units is very limited 😱 9/n
It'll remain one of the great "what ifs" of game consoles for me. Fin
PS: Also follow Video Game Esoterica @VEsoterica if you're as interested in the M2 as I am - I think he's probably got the greatest M2 collection on the planet and has made a lot of fascinating videos (several of which I've linked to in this thread).
