Thread on why atheists in Western countries who come from either a Christian or a non-religious Western background are culturally Christianity.
In the West, Christianity is the culture and for this reason all Christians and most atheists will have a Christian perspective on everything, which makes these people culturally Christian.
Western atheists cannot shed the Christian perspective they have on everything because they aren’t replacing it with a different perspective, rather they just become secular while still being a fully active member within a Christian society.
In addition to this, everyone in Western countries learns how to navigate and participate in a Christian society.
For Western Christians and culturally Christian atheists navigating and participating in this society is relatively easy because all they know is Christian culture.
For people who aren’t culturally Christian we are forced to learn to navigate and participate in this society while not being culturally Christian, which can make everything much more difficult.
Not being culturally Christian means one may lack an understanding of certain societal norms and it may also mean that sometimes one will have to choose between who they are and being a fully active participant in society, this is especially true around holidays.
This is why most atheists in Western countries who come from either a Christian or a non-religious Western background are culturally Christian, despite not being religiously Christian.
