It's been an hour since the session ended but I'm still loaded with adrenaline from tonight's D&D sesh. One of the party members almost died. This is a character who has been with us in our campaigns for almost 2 real-life years of playing! Details in thread:
Basically for about 4-5 months of sessions ago, our usual fiery, passionate, loud & shouty mage had become extremely quiet, placid & robotic. One word replies, etc. We dealt with this for a long time, but 2 sessions ago we finally found the answer to what happened...
In her elven culture, elves have tattoos that symbolize the god their souls are tied to. It was revealed she now had two magic tattoos branded on top of each other, and it signified that she had tried to connect with a second god, of which was clashing with the other god.
The only way to reset this was for the higher elven clerics to put her into a sleeping death in a cavern, of which her soul leaves her body & must find it again, renewed.

The problem is, there's a serious chance that the soul never finds its body again; & thus officially DIES!!!
The process can take hours, or up to weeks. There is no way to know.

Our mage asked my chara Unalie specifically to accompany her while she went under (since I'm a cleric & have healed her from near-death before). Unalie promised she wouldn't leave her side until she woke up.
The problem was.... our friend rolled a Natural 1 after going under. LMAO.

We didn't know until after the session ended, but this signified that she was going to be in sleeping death for the longest possible time.

My character stayed by her side in that cavern for over 10 days.
It was an emotionally exhausting 3.5 hours of gameplay. Our mage went through what I can only describe as literal hell and afterlife as she existed only as the searing, hottest possible pain for those 10 days. And other insanely cool stuff I can't describe enough well here.
But yeah my cleric was literally just there with her in the cavern for the entire time, over 10 days, waiting for her to wake up again, not knowing when it would happen! She had food and drink brought to her (and yes we thought of chamberpots too ROFL).
MEANWHILE IN REAL LIFE WE ALL THOUGHT OUR MAGE WAS GONNA DIE FOR LIKE, HOURS OF PLAYING. WE WERE SOOOOOO TENSE. It really didn't look hopeful for the soul coming back.
Anyway, thankfully.... after what was probably an unfathomable amount of suffering, our mage woke up. But her tattoos had completely dissolved away, so it was extremely traumatic. She'll be forever scarred by her experience now.

But our charas were all so emotional & relieved!!
And lastly, some backstory was kinda revealed for my chara Unalie had been put under a similar concept of "sleeping death" by her parents sometime in the past, due to what she mentions was "a curse"; something she is afraid our mage is going through as well, in a different form.
Applause to our DM for a crazy intense rollercoaster. 🙌 Our mage's long spiritual journey was seriously amazing and so immersive to listen to.

And I was deffo the most "empathic" of a player that I've ever been tonight LOL. (I don't usually "emotionally" act when playing).
