If nothing else, quarantine has allowed me to dive headfirst into obsessing over producing my podcast and the soundtrack for it which has lead to me grow as a podcast producer AS WELL AS a music producer.
I know it's not a race but in comparison to before/the beginning of quarantine my production time is cut in half AT LEAST. And I've learned so many new techniques just from noodling around in ableton and watching producers I like on youtube.
I often get pretty salty at tweets saying things like "Don't go to art school!" "Do it at home for free!" because I went to art school and re-learned everything I thought I knew for the better. It was a foundational education that I desperately needed.
That being said, there is something so satisfying and confidence boosting about having an idea that you're not sure how to execute by any means and then finally creating that thing through trial, error, and reference videos/posts online for free from home.
I minored in music in college and produced my first EP in my senior year but I still felt like I knew virtually nothing about music production until now. Which isn't to say I'm a professional or even a good producer by any means.
It just means that giving up won't get you anywhere. Shying away from new technologies/techniques/artistic methods for fear of failure right out of the gate will get you nowhere. Trying and failing and trying again until you succeed once is the only way you learn new things.
This thread started because I was proud of my own progress over the last few months and became a long rant about learning because I absolutely love learning and want to do it for the rest of my life. Please keep learning and trying and failing until you make the progress you like
