HELLO, I WROTE AN EARNEST THREAD:
I've been thinking a lot about twitter recently, and how I've been using it, and how I might want to use it going forward.
A thing I've noticed since I had a baby last year and especially since quarantine is that my senses are weirdly but noticeably heightened--I'm a lot less able to tolerate too much input at once, which makes this platform overwhelming a lot of the time.
Short of deleting altogether, in all honesty my instinct is to just dart in here every once in awhile, loudly yell information about my books, hope someone hears it over the general cacophony, and then run out again.
But like, that's crummy! I don't want to be here just to try to sell stuff! I've made so many friends on this hellsite! I've found so many creators I love and admire. I have learned so, SO much.
When I thought about it, it occurred to me that the people I enjoy following the most--the accounts I seek out even when I'm not scrolling my feed--are the ones adding real value to my life in some way, either with insightful commentary or useful links or just like, good jokes.
So, in the interest of being somebody who might add some small value for someone else, I think I'm going to start using this space mostly to recommend things I love--books, personal practices, kissing scenes from late 90s WB dramedies to watch on YouTube, etc etc.
And I hope you'll recommend things back to me too!
Today's rec is @emilymandel's luminous new book THE GLASS HOTEL, which got me out of a gruesome Covid-related reading slump a couple of weeks ago. It's sprawling and atmospheric and humane and gorgeously written and sort of a ghost story but also not? Anyway, I really loved it.
OKAY, END THREAD. I love you! I'm excited to try to be here a little more this summer (and, as always, you can also find me on instagram or tumblr or at http://katiecotugno.com ). ALSO I DO HAVE TWO BOOKS OUT THIS YEAR AND YOU CAN BUY THEM, etc etc. I'm gonna go drink some water.
You can follow @katiecotugno.
