🧵 THREAD - PATRIARCHY (Is “Biblical Patriarchy” the same thing as “Complementarianism”? Should marriages be modeled on Old Testament historical figures?)

Dr Todd Bordow (Cornerstone OPC):

“There’s been a resurgence of the Christian Patriarchy movement under Doug Wilson.”

>>>
First, a brief definition:

“Christian Patriarchy” is an extrabiblical movement based on a few Old Testament historical figures and involves purity culture, submission of all women to all men, a family structure that revolves around the father & very rigid gender roles.

>>>
**Please note that not all Patriarchalists hold to all the tenets listed in the “Tenets of the Christian Patriarchy Movement” (below) but these are the ones that chiefly characterize the movement**

>>>
Note that there are many conservative, Confessional Christian women who:

1) Are in good standing with their churches

2) Affirm that only qualified males should be ordained

3) Affirm wives should submit to their own husbands

...but do not affirm the tenets of Patriarchy.

>>>
Pastor Todd Bordow (Cornerstone OPC) has done an excellent program examining the Christian Patriarchy movement. He also lists the tenets of the movement. Providentially, God has brought women into his church who’ve been harmed by the movement & who he has counseled & helped.

>>>
Note that Dr Bordow is an OPC pastor. The OPC is a conservative branch of the Presbyterian church & not a promoter of Egalitarianism.

The ‘Tenets of the Christian Patriarchy Movement’ have been isolated from Bordow’s interview & other primary sources

THE CHIEF TENETS OF CHRISTIAN PATRIARCHY*
(*Note that not all Patriarchalists hold to all of the tenets listed below, but these are the ones that chiefly characterize the movement)

1) Patriarchy means “Father Rule” and is based on a few Old Testament historical figures

>>>

2) Husbands act as prophets, priests & kings in their homes

3) Husbands are not just the leader of their homes, but also the authority (Patriarchalists conflate leadership with authority, but these are not the same thing)

>>>

4)Women are ontologically & creationally inferior

5)There’s a strong, purposeful distrust of feelings within Patriarchy, a view which teaches women not to trust their emotions. Emotions are considered very dangerous & unreliable.

>>>

6) Women are believed to be more gullible and more easily deceived than men.

7) Wives are often discouraged from voting. “Household voting” is sometimes encouraged, with the husband casting one vote to represent the family.

8) The wife does not stand before the LORD on her own; rather, her husband mediates between her and the LORD.

9) ALL women are to submit to ALL men (in their church, in the workplace, everywhere), not just to their own husbands.

10) Women are to submit based on a misinterpretation of the Trinity by Wayne Grudem. This misinterpretation (which is actually a Trinitarian heresy) teaches that Christ the Son is eternally subordinate to God the Father and...

...that likewise in this way, wives are to submit in everything & also into eternity. The teaching [a heresy] is known as ESS (Eternal Subordination of the Son).

Wayne Grudem, CBMW board member, has written a paper supporting ESS

11) Wives’ submission is as a subject to a king, or a child to a parent, rather than a voluntary act between equals in a marriage that is rightly ordered before God (“In Christ there is neither male nor female”)

>>>

12) The husband has the right to demand and/or force his wife to submit

>>>

13) Women aren’t to work outside the home/seek a career & shouldn’t run for political office. Reasoning: she can’t both obey her own husband & obey another boss, & that if she’s out in the world she’s submitting to another man.

>>>

14) Female daughters are not to pursue higher education

15) Daughters are viewed as their father’s property, to be handed over to the daughters’ future husbands through a carefully supervised courtship process

>>>

16) Daughters are under their father’s authority, but sons are not

17) The courtship model for dating and marriage is often used (purity rings, purity culture, arranged marriages, etc.)
