1/ Veteran story..my father had a brother who would have been 2 years older had he not died at 1. My grandparents gave my father his brothers social security number and birth certificate. I now this sounds weird by current standards but it was the Italian ghetto in the 20’s ...
2/ fast forward 16 years later and the army comes calling for Vincenzo Iuorio who they think is 18 years old but is really 16. So he’s off to boot camp instead of finishing high school...I realize would be a cooler story if he stormed the beaches..but he just stayed state side.
3/ that same grandfather, who was the head (ish)of our household in my childhood was Alessandro Iuorio who came to America in 1910 and 7 years later got an all expense 2 years cruise to France courtesy of the U.S. army..
4/ occasionally he would tell stories of the horrors of the trenches. Often he would mention the rats. It sounded like a living hell. Anyway..I know most of us have our family stories and many of you guys served..thanks..a lot
