1/ #EffectivePrayer (Part 14)
Not every situation can be turned around by just praying once. There are times where you will be required to persist and prevail in the place of prayer. When you're faced with these kinds of situations, the Prayer of Petition is required.

The prayer of faith does not apply to every situation. When you have a desire to make a change within your personal control, you can use it. However, there are certain situations which will require persistence in the place of prayer until you get a note of victory.
3/
Whenever you're faced with situations dictated or influenced by forces beyond you, this is the kind of prayer that you require. This is how Elijah prayed when he wanted to stop rain from falling in the land, and again, when he wanted the rain to return.
4/
"Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." (James 5:17-18 NIV).
5/
The Bible says that he prayed "earnestly". It wasn't a passive kind of prayer. When we read the account in 1 Kings chapter 18, we see how he didn't stop praying until he got the sign that his petition had been granted. In the prayer of petition, you must be willing to pray...
6/
...until you get a note of victory, or receive what you're praying for. This will require discipline on your part and a strong desire to effect a change. In the prayer of petition, you don't take "no" for an answer. You must have a resolve, just like Jacob who said...
7/
... "I won't let you go until you bless me" (Genesis 32:26). When you're willing to prevail in prayer like this, tremendous power is made available (James 5:16). God has given us the ability to cause changes in whatever situation we may face. Whether or not we take advantage..
8/
...of this ability is up to us. You cannot make any impact through prayer if you're lazy and always looking for fast answers. There is an element of patience and diligence which is expected if you want to tap into the power that God has made available to us.
9/
The prayer of petition requires time and labour on your part. It's a matter of how badly you want to see the change. In the prayer of petition, it's like presenting a case in the court room, with God as the Judge. You must therefore present your reasons in a compelling way.
10/
In the book How To Pray Effectively, Rev. Chris Oyakhilome describes a petition this way:
"a petition is a formal written plea with legal demands. A
petitioner writes according to legal guidelines and makes his request in such a way as to convince the one he is presenting...
11/
...his petition to. It is also defined as a solemn entreaty; a supplication or request appealing to an authority, or an
earnest or humble appeal for something or to someone."
When you make a petition, there are legal guidelines that you must follow.
12/
These guidelines are based on the Word of God. You must know what God has spoken concerning your situation in the Word, and based on these guidelines, you present your case. “Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.”(Is.43:26)
13/
You must also present your petition in a compelling and convincing way. “Present your case,” says the LORD. “Bring forth your strong reasons,” says the King of Jacob." (Is.41:21). Just like a lawyer presents his case with the necessary evidence and articles from the law...
14/
...to support his case, the prayer of petition requires the same diligence on your part. You do not give up on the case until you have secured the victory. In this age that we're in, too many people are looking for the easy way out. They want the fastest way to get things done
15/
With God however, there's no "quick fix". If you really want to experience victory in every situation, you will need the discipline to tarry in prayer. And not just that, but the discipline to also diligently study the Word and know how and when to apply it.
16/
This is just a brief intro to the Prayer of Petition. There's so much to say about this kind of prayer which can't fully be expressed in this thread. You can get the book "How To Pray Effectively" and learn more about it in the 3rd and 4th chapters. Have a blessed week
