Clark Atlanta University

CAU was created when Clark U & Atlanta U merged in 1988.

Atlanta U was THEE first institution PERIOD to award graduate degrees to African Americans

The renowned Civil Rights Activist & Writer W.E.B. DuBois taught at AU for a remarkable 23 years.
Fisk University

Founded in Nashville, Tennessee (1866)

THEE first HBCU to gain accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1930.

The campus is listed as a National Historic District in 1978 in recognition of its cultural significance.

Founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (1880)

THEE largest HBCU in Louisiana.

Home of THEE iconic “Human Jukebox” marching band.

Notable Alumn include but are not limited to: Common, who is known as a rapper, actor and philanthropist.
Hampton University

Founded in Hampton, Virginia (1868)

Hampton’s campus is home to the Emancipation Oak, where the Emancipation was read in the South for the 1st time.

Most of campus is a National Historic Landmark District.

Famous educator and orator Booker T. is an Alumn.
Lincoln University

Founded in Pennsylvania (1854)

THEE first degree-granting HBCU in the nation.

Renamed in honor of Abraham Lincoln.

Notable Alumni include: THEE first black Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall & famous poet and social activist, Langston Hughes.

Founded in Norfolk, Virginia (1935)

NSU was founded in the midst of the Great Depression and “provided a setting in which the youth could give expression to their hopes and aspiration.”

NSU is home to the award-winning “Spartan Legion” marching band.
Morgan State University

Founded in Baltimore, MD (1867)

THEE MSU “Magnificent Marching Machine” performed in the 2019 Macy’s 93rd Thanksgiving Day Parade.

MSU proudly competes in the NCAA’s Division 1 Mideastern Athletic Conference.
Virginia State University

Founded in Petersburg VA, (1882)

VSU is home to THEE iconic “Trojan Explosion” Marching Band.

Notable Alumn include but are not limited to Reginald Lewis, who is known as the first Black man to build a billion-dollar company.
Delaware State University (1891)

Previously known as the State College for Colored Students.

DSU is accredited by Middle States & seven specialized academic accrediting agencies.

DSU’s College of Business is “One of the most outstanding business schools.” -Princeton Review.
Johnson C. Smith University

Founded in Charlotte, North Carolina (1867)

Previously known as Biddle College.

THEE FIRST Black College Football game was played between Livingston College & Biddle College (now JSCU).

Today JSCU has 15 NCAA Division 2 teams.
Bowie State University

Founded in Bowie, Maryland (1865)

Bowie State is Maryland’s oldest HBCU and one of the ten oldest in the country.

Bowie State is a consistent leader in the graduation of African Americans in Education.
