Reading Shamus's piece about how his quest for fame kinda backfired on him made me think back and think about how much the style of internet reviewing has changed.
Once upon a time, it was cool and even funny to just trash certain shows or movies. Call the staff incompetent nincompoops, slam the actors, criticize every minute detail. It was an easy way to amass a following because you were telling people exactly what they wanted to hear.
Nowadays it's considered very disrespectful, mean-spirited, cruel, being a jerk for the sake of being a jerk, and even straight up bullying. Sometimes just focusing on the negatives isn't always enough.
Just because you can criticize something doesn't mean you have what it takes to be a critic. Not everybody has the skills for that. You gotta approach things with a neutral stance so that way, you'll always have something interesting and new to say about something.
If I'm livetweeting something, even if I'm largely not liking it, I still strive to make sure I have something positive to say at least. Not out of pity or the counteract the negativity, but because I genuinely enjoyed it and try to give a more balanced stance.
