I always laugh when people romanticize Ethiopia. Living in Ethiopia was my first experience of xenophobia. Its not violent xenophobia like in SA but it's not suttle either. As an African who isnt Ethiopian you are made to feel it.

You will be walking down the street and someone will shout out "hey you African". Or people would say to me often "you don't look African, your face is konjo (beautiful) like Ethiopian not like an African." I suppose that was meant to be a compliment.

I enjoyed my time there though. I enjoyed it so much I came back with a baby.

I'm so glad noone made a big deal of my spelling of subtle.
