So shops are reopening day by day. Lots of room for better precautions, based on what I have seen over the last week. For example, a ubiquitous sandwich shop (chain) has lots of sanitiser at screen-protected tills, but none on entry; I saw one customer pick up & put back 6 items.
I asked the shop manager why no sanitiser on entry - replied they do not want to hassle customers too much. I mentioned the guy who touched multiple products with no hand hygiene - the manager just shrugged. Staff need to be empowered and supported by their employers.
Another chain selling bread and baked goods, coffee, cakes and sandwiches in London: again, no sanitiser on entry, only at the till. No social distancing enforcement, so I intervened.
My local garden centre is arguably lower risk, since outside and bright sunshine, but can do better. They insist on sanitiser on entry, but none is available at the till. Long queue inside as only one till open, despite lots of staff around, and inadequate distancing as a result.
If you're a local grocer that sells potted herb plants, perhaps think twice before sticking your own nose in a pot of basil and then inviting your customer to do the same (true story
). We all want life to do normal things like this again, but we are not ready for that yet!

We (Society) do not have lots of time to get this right; transmission never disappeared, despite lower case numbers recently in some areas, including London. Some shops need to do more and can do more, now. It's in everyone's interests and, I believe, makes good business sense.
Finally, I think we can all be as responsible as possible when shopping. Do not enter a crowded shop. Keep a 2m distance. Shop alone where possible. Carry hand sanitiser. Browse with your eyes, not your hands. Stay at home if you are ill, even if your symptoms are mild.
Finally, even though I feel like a freak because I never see anyone else using their own hand sanitiser when I'm out and about, I still think it's a good idea to assume every surface you touch when shopping is contaminated and practice frequent and thorough hand hygiene.

And two mentions of finally. Sorry, no more, I promise; mini-rant over (for today)
