Doing some speculative thinking about ancient grasslands and looking at the distribution of some possible indicators and I see Betony, Great Burnet, Saw-wort, and Pepper-saxifrage don't go more north than (roughly) Hadrian's Wall and so wondered if they were already present 1/2
in the UK when Romans arrived but that Roman agriculture/central government helped move them north? I have read Betony was used as a Roman healing herb (but not researched any further) & suspect the seeds of all species do not spread far easily without help from large animals.
