following up on my ALA comments: one of the panelists reached out to clarify that the panel was poorly titled & it was about the transitioning to comics writing from prose. understandable. but i think it is very myopic of ALA to not give artists a voice on this topic too
a lot of times when transitioning from comics to prose writing the artist has to hand-hold and act as editor as well as artist. that perspective is important, as the panelist pointed out-- everyone on the panel reiterated that comics is a team sport.
comic artists who work with writers who have transitioned from prose do so much more than the labor of a year or more spent drawing a book-- oftentimes make writing and editorial suggestions as well to make dialogue fit better. there is so much hidden labor comics artists do.
so i think it was very vital to have this perspective on the panel as well, and again: no panel about comics, any part of the process, should be without artist input.
