I am appalled by American and European naivete with regard to China.
The mistakes the West made with regard to the Middle Kingdom have come to haunt it: Here are, merely, a few of the top hits:
1. Nixon and Kissinger's overtures to China to drive a wedge between it and the Soviet Union.
2. China getting the Security Council seat and the veto.
3. Acquiescing to the banishment of Taiwan from the UN.
4. Clinton's advocacy to facilitate China's entry into the WTO.
5. Successive American, European leaders and intellectuals who deluded themselves into thinking that a capitalist China would become (ha) democratic and open!
6. Transfer of technology through the rapaciousness of Western corporations who sold the family silver to get a share of the market.
It is not too late, but if the Europeans want to survive as anything other than a vassal state, they will have to stop thinking about their profits and start thinking about strategic security.
