Thread:

Women are underrepresented in all areas of government. In 2021, we have an opportunity and a duty to elect more women to governance positions. Want to see how your municipal government fares currently in terms of female representation? Check out the chart below.

As shown in the charts above, women account for only 32.71% of elected municipal government positions, despite making up 50% of the population. Wondering why issues that are important to you like childcare, education, etc aren’t being addressed by your local government?

This might be why. Something else to note is that there is next to ZERO representation from POC in Albertan municipal governments. This needs to change. So what can you do? Here’s a few ideas.

1. Encourage women who are community leaders to run for office.

2. Help to eliminate traditional barriers for women in politics: volunteer to babysit, donate to their campaign, volunteer for their campaign, organize a meal train.

3. If where you live doesn’t have proportional female representation in council, talk to people about it.

4. Consider running for office yourself. So many women discredit themselves because they don’t feel worthy of the task. You are worthy- and we need your voices. Look into many of the profiles of men in these positions- seriously. You’re good. (Trust me)

I will personally donate or volunteer for any progressive female candidates that choose to run in 2021. I believe in you. Let’s get this done, ladies (and allies)
