If you haven’t guessed, I’m a big fan of J.R.R. #Tolkien and have been, ever since I read #lotr for the first time a loooong time ago (34 years to be exact). #fantasy #fanart #wallart #literature #photography
The #ents and Tom Bombadil are of course things that resonate well with Finns because of the #Kalevala connection.
If you are not familiar with #Kalevala, I highly recommend it and it has been translated into 61 languages. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kalevala_translations
Fun fact that #lotr has been translated into 38 or 38 languages counting in The Hobbit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Translations_of_The_Lord_of_the_Rings
It is also a known fact that #Tolkien drew a lot of inspiration from #Kalevala and the Finno-Ugric languages.
I specifically use the term Finno-Ugric or even Uralic, as I’ve been closely following the rise of the #Karelian activism put forth by @poromorko et alia. 🙃👌🏻👍🏻💪🏼
Why I think this is relevant to the photograph that instigated this thread is that Finns are as guilty of #cultural #imperialism as are the French or Spanish for example. The location for this image is in the heartlands of the #Occitan people.
