What's going on with #covid19 cases in different countries in #Africa? Here's a thread, starting with the good news. #Mauritius 🇲🇺 has apparently crushed the virus:
#Ghana 🇬🇭 has also seen a sharp decline from its peak about a week and a half ago, but it's not out of the woods yet.
#Senegal 🇸🇳 has also seen a steady decline since a peak about a week and a half ago. But there's a long way to go and it's far too soon to tell if this is a permanent decline, a plateau, or just a pause in the rise in case numbers:
#Algeria 🇩🇿 was one of the earliest outbreaks in Africa. There's been a steady rise, but over the last two weeks there's been a rough plateau in new reported infections:
#CotedIvoire 🇨🇮 also appears to be on a plateau - though it is highly volatile, even when cases are averaged per week. That suggests problems in the reliability of the testing data.
Speaking of unreliable data... #Tanzania 🇹🇿 data is a mess. Not surprising considering that their President John Magafuli has largely ignored scientific and public health advice.
Next up, #Uganda 🇺🇬 which imposed one of the harshest lockdowns anywhere and has been doing lots of testing - including at border crossings with neighboring #Tanzania where many truck drivers have tested positive.
Staying in East Africa, we go to #Kenya 🇰🇪, which also imposed a strict lockdown. But Kenya's cases are clearly going up (the dip in cases is only two days old, so it is not enough to draw any conclusion yet).
The international shipping and military hub #Djibouti 🇩🇯 has some of the highest rates of testing anywhere. But it shows a steep rise in case (although they have remarkably few deaths).
In Central Africa, both #Cameroon 🇨🇲 and #DRC show sharp rises in new cases per day:
As do both #SouthSudan 🇸🇸 and #Sudan. South Sudan isn't testing nearly enough, but it's clear their cases are going up.
Cases are also shooting up in neighboring #Ethiopia. I think it's fair to say that the East and Horn of Africa is struggling to keep the virus under control.
Another country, like #Algeria, that has had a long outbreak is #Egypt 🇪🇬, yet cases are still rising dramatically there.
Heading south to #Madagascar, we see another steep rise in new cases per day. It seems President Andry Rajoelina's unproven "miracle cure" has not had any effect stopping the spread of the virus nationwide.
Africa's most populous country #Nigeria 🇳🇬 also one of its most complicated, and the covid19 data is no different. Have new cases numbers pleateaued in the last two weeks, or are they set to rise further?
I'll close this thread with #SouthAfrica 🇿🇦, where an early, strict lockdown severely curtailed new cases in the first few weeks. But new daily cases are rising steadily as the country opens up.
