I very much appreciate this admission from the economics profession’s defenders that introductory economics instruction - which is all the vast majority of people encounter - consists largely of lying to students about how the economy works.
Suppose we were to accept that upper-level economics courses aren’t nearly as bad as intro courses & that the good ones can help you unlearn the nonsense you learn in intro courses. That still wouldn’t explain why it would be okay to teach people nonsense in the intro courses!
It’s important to understand that most economics departments in the United States are not concerned with helping people understand how the economy actually works. They’re intent upon getting a political philosophy that benefits the wealthy accepted as objective fact.
Does this mean all economists are bad or all economics instruction awful? Of course not! But it does mean we should be skeptical of what is asserted as fact in the name of economics, as it is far less often true than many economists would have you believe. https://twitter.com/benspielberg/status/1264976246846312448?s=21 https://twitter.com/benspielberg/status/1264976246846312448
