The most consistent myth today even among non-sympathizers is that the state retains some legal right to leave the Union because “the Founders originally intended it”. The Constitution does not contain a leave clause & the Framers rejected this interpretation (I.e Madison)
In fact the Constitution does explicitly authorize the federal government to raise up & command troops to put down rebellions which is exactly what you call extrajudicial authorities firing on federal installations.

Great example: Confederate authorities in Texas literally tried to confiscate every privately held firearm in the state (by merchants). The Richmond authorities nationalized industries, implemented high taxes in kind, restricted habeas corpus, implemented a robust draft, etc...
