In contrast to the two generations of Americans before them, most Americans of the last two generations haven’t served in the military. The military is something they don’t understand and find foreign to us.

Yet for my grandfather who I’m named after and my Uncle along with my ancestors before them (going back to the Civil War) military service was normal. There were evil people in the world and someone had to end them.

My generation & the one before it don’t understand that evil must be met with force. They don’t understand that evil must be met with sacrifice. They don’t understand that you leave & know you might never come back. Our generation thinks sacrifice entails giving up of luxury.

They imagine sitting on a couch with food & entertainment, with your family safe next to you during Covid-19 was challenging.
Our new generation in America thinks everything can be talked through and that diplomacy and conflict management can solve all problems.

They believe that evil dictators can be transformed, if only they were understood and we met them halfway. Appeasement is the answer.
The American military still gets it. They’ve traveled and met evil face to face in the hills of Afghanistan and the deserts of Iraq.

Israelis understand it. They’ve seen evil up close in the suicide bombs of Palestinians, the rocket attacks of Hezballah and the death chants from across the fence in Gaza.
American Memorial Day is about more than remembering those we’ve lost.

Memorial Day forces us to remember that they died for our freedom. It forces us to come to terms with evil & the force, sacrifice, & death required to end it.
This Memorial Day let’s take a few minutes to recognize true sacrifice & be grateful to those who served.
