Oh yeah I was gonna talk about why I like side characters more then the protagonist lol. I guess I can do that now even tho I’m half asleep. (Thread)
I’m still learning how to properly write, but I think I perfectly understand writing concepts and plot, it’s mainly my spacing and how dialogue flows I need to work on. So I’m somewhat confident in what I’m about to rant about here hehe.
Anyways, let’s talk about protagonists. Every story has one, sometimes they have more then one, but they all have one thing in common: they are usually struggling with something and by the end of the story, they over come it. (Unless it’s horror of course)
Sometimes they do have a goal tho, and their end goal, but they still face struggles AND they both have one thing in common: they learn something by the end of the story. What they learn is usually connected to the theme of the story, so it can teach the viewer a lesson.
Basically, every protagonist is faced with either a goal or a struggle, and as the story progresses, they learn to accomplish that goal or get over the struggle they were once facing.(Respectively) and by the end, they learn a very valuable lesson.
And then we have side characters. Sometimes they have struggles or goals of their own, but they are mainly there to support the main character and in the struggle case, there current struggle is probably not as bad as the main character.
(Unless of course the whole conflict the story is centered around IS something all the characters are struggling with and said conflict is very bad but that’s a different can of worms)
And that’s kinda why I like side characters more, because while I can usually connect to the protagonist, I sorta know they follow a rinse and repeat process. Both reoccurring protagonist and just, protagonist in general.
Protagonist, while you can write really good ones, are always held back by the fact that, unless your making a villain protagonist, they are always the same. Again, that’s not to say there aren’t any good protagonist, there certainly are. B u t
Side characters don’t get held back by this, the only thing holding them back is they aren’t the main character, meaning they aren’t always around. But if they were the main character, they would lose their uniqueness, even if it be nice to see the story in their eyes.
And side characters, while common troops can be used in multiple supporting cast, I mainly like side characters because they almost always feel different. Even if a common troop is used for one or more of the cast, I can still find them unique.
It’s mainly thanks to the setting of the story AND how the protagonist is characterized, that makes the supporting cast stick out more. Without that, the side characters just don’t feel as good.
Tho I am gonna say right now I do NOT like it it when the side characters are more interesting then the main character. Like every story is obviously gonna have that one character who is more interesting then the protagonist, but don’t make it a common character.
Make it say a villain or a very significant character who won’t show up till later, or at the very least: make sure your protagonist is as interesting as your supporting cast. Bc bland/boring protagonists are no good.
Anyways
That pretty much concludes this long rant but not really rant bc I didn’t feel angry writing this thread lol.
I hope you all learned something new or at the very least see how passionate I am about writing. (I swear I’ll get back to it sooon)
