The temple has its deity made during the Gupta period. It is actually distinct,the only other comparison being the Pashupatinath deity in Nepal. What makes it all the more interesting is that both the idols were mentioned by Kalidasa in his works.

The idol weighs 4.5 tons & is 7.5ft tall divided into two parts having four faces in upper section & remaining four in the lower. The four doors of the shrine openĀ in four different directions.

It was discovered in the river bed of the Shivana. It has been reconstructed into the temple. A laundry man used to wash clothes on a stone at banks of the Shivna River. In his dream Lord Shiva apprd & said he is washing clothes on his idol.

Later, when exacaveted that stone found out to be the idol of Pashupatinath.
During monsoon, level of Shivna River rises to touch the holyĀ Shiv LingĀ of lord Shiva. This is termed as ā€œJalaabhishekā€ means worshiping the Almighty through the water.
