I am writing a thread on the reasons which I believe are the cause of failure of @mybmc and the state govt in handling of Covid pandemic in Mumbai.
1/13
Number of Covid positive cases in India, has crossed 1.39 lakhs..Out of this, Maharashtra has 50,231 cases..The biggest contributor is the financial capital of India i.e. Mumbai with over 30,000 cases..On fatalities front, India has 4,021 out of which Maharashtra has 1,635.
2/13
Mumbai has a little less than 1,000 fatalities..The reasons for such higher number of cases in Mumbai are 2.
1) A very high population residing in slums/chawls.
2) Incompetance and apathy from #BMC and the state govt..
In last few days, I have come to know about a few cases+
3/13
+ in my surroundings as well as at some distant place..

4-5 days back, a 60 year old man residing at Motibag building, near Gandhi market, King's Circle was found to be Covid positive.. @mybmc officials picked him up and took him to a hospital..BMC officials didnt test his+

+wife and son..Officials merely instructed them to observe Home Quarantine..The Society members requested officials to test the family members of the infected person..However, BMC officials refused to do so..Ironically, even family members refused to get themselves tested.
5/13
I have also been informed that #BMC has not even bothered to trace the contacts of the infected person..
Now coming to cases in my surroundings, 10 days back, a fatality occurred in a slum, due to Covid..Last Sunday, 2 persons were suspected to have been infected with+
6/13
Covid..3 more persons from an adjecent slum were also suspected to have been infected with Covid.. #BMC transferred all 5 of them to quarantine centre..
@mybmc did not bother to test any othere residents of these 2 slums..
One of the major reasons why Mumbai has the highest++
7/13
+ number of Covid cases in entire country is that, more than 60% of Mumbai population resides in very dense slums/chawls..In slums, the distance between two tenements is hardly 1-1/2 feet..Residents have to use common toilets..Hence, the concept of social distancing and+
8/13
+ Home qurantine will not serve any purpose in slums/chawls.
Whenever any positive case has occured in a slum/chawl, @mybmc has picked up that person & transferred him/her to hospital.. @mybmc hasnt tested the patient's nearest kins who are residing with him.. #BMC has simply+
9/13
+ instructed them to observe Home qurantine..Because of the reasons cited in tweets 8 & 9, #BMC ' s instructions have failed in containing Covid pandemic in Mumbai..We have seen videos of hospitals overflowing with patients..Dead bodies lying on floor adjecent to patients.
10/13
Doctors' and attendents' are tired..They don't have enough PPEs..We have also seen a video of a Police personnel complaining lack of face masks, body protection kits..
11/13
Around 1,800 Police personnel across Maharashtra have been infected with Covid..18 of them have died..
To an ordinary Mumbaikar like me, both @mybmc and the state govt have displayed abject incompetence and apathy in recognising the consequences of their inactions..
12/13
It appears that both @mybmc and the state govt are clueless about the consequences of Covid pandemic and, shrugged off their respective responsibilities in navigating Mumbai through these turbulent times..

For me, only God can be my saviour..
