In islam integrated psychotherapy, the focus is on helping an individual reach their full spiritual potential; ultimate goal is getting closer to Allah SWT by exploring how aql, nafs, rooh and emotion affect the heart of the person
These components are intertwined and have reciprocal effects on one another, mostly the heart, Islam recognizes the heart to be more than an organ, the heart is recognized for its spiritual and intellectual role
A small example of how the therapy can work -
1. An individual has regretful actions that are hard on him
2. Repentance over guilt rationalization- closure comes in the form of seeking forgiveness from Allah
3. Sinful actions are not condoned, rather repentance is prioritized
4. Leads to modification of behavior, essentially focusing on pleasing the creator rather than the creation -finding comfort for the soul
5. Unproductive beliefs are identified, these are then replaced or modified in accordance to the teaching of Islam
I am not necessarily against all therapeutic options from western sources, I am just biased towards an Islamic approach since as Muslims our main focus is attaining closeness to Allah and psychotherapy can be utilized for this purpose to a great extent :)
